Workshop with Ràdio Web MACBA

How can we translate our collective experiences and knowledge of weather into a set of shared tools—stories, imagery, sounds—for navigating climate uncertainty?

In December 2023, the Ràdio Web MACBA Working Group invited open-weather to Barcelona for a workshop, exchange and interview.

Responding to the idea of making work “between orality and discourse and aurality and sound”, our workshop began with an attempt to co-produce a Sonic Weather Library: a collection of weathers lived on the ground and sensed remotely (Ràdio Web MACBA 2020). Together, we recorded the neighbourhood weathers of Plaça de Joan Coromines, cooked food and were led by a museum guard up a locked tower to listen to satellites. Returning to the tower in the evening, we could only detect a very weak signal, barely audible above the radio static and nighttime sounds of Plaça dels Àngels. The workshop ended with speculation about the radio environment of Barcelona.
